Jícaras are the traditional Mayan drinking cups for ceremonial cacao

The Popol Wuj (sacred book of the Maya) tells the story of Junajpu and Ixbalanque, known as the Elders, who teach us how to overcome the trials of Xib'alb'a (the Mayan underworld, which represents our own darkness). They go through a journey of conquering the trials of life and overcoming the parts of ourselves that do not serve our purpose in life. They teach us about awareness, determination, and strength. After the twins successfully overcome the trials of darkness, they transform into jícaras, a type of gourd that grows on a sacred tree. For thousands of years, the Maya have emptied the gourd and drunk their medicine, such as cacao, from it. The cup itself is associated with medicinal purposes, so drinking cacao medicine from it enhances the effects and brings even more healing.

These jícaras from Rabinal in Guatemala are 100% natural from the tree, dried and hand painted.

Before we get into the technical details, take a moment to learn where the cocoa drinking vessels come from...

WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO KNOW

Origin of the Jícara

These beautiful jícaras come from the Baja Verapaz region. They are 100% handmade by a local family that has been producing jícaras for decades. A mother, her daughter and other members of the family collect the jícaras from the trees, empty them, dry them in the sun and create these beautiful patterns by hand. By purchasing these jícaras you support this hard-working Guatemalan family who have been committed to continuing this tradition for many years and are very happy that their drinking vessels are now traveling around the world.

Clean

You can use them like any other drinking vessel. To wash them, use a regular sponge and soap. DO NOT put them in the dishwasher.
